Vitosha Nature Park

Overview

Vitosha Nature Park is a vast mountain wilderness rising directly above Sofia, making the Bulgarian capital one of the few European cities with a major mountain literally at its doorstep. Covering over 27,000 hectares, the park offers year-round outdoor activities from hiking and skiing to picnicking and wildlife watching.

• Golden Bridges Stone River: A spectacular natural phenomenon—a 'river' of enormous golden-brown morraine boulders flowing down the mountainside.
• Cherni Vrah Peak: At 2,290 metres, the highest point offers sweeping panoramas over Sofia and the surrounding mountains.

History

Established as a nature park in 1934, Vitosha was the first such designated park on the Balkan Peninsula. The mountain has been central to Sofia life for millennia—Thracians, Romans, and medieval Bulgarians all valued its forests and mineral springs.

Visitor Tips

• Getting There: Take the Simeonovo gondola or bus 66 to Aleko hut as a starting point.
• Seasonal: Best for hiking May–October, skiing December–March.
• Duration: Half-day to full day depending on activity.
