Patershol is Ghent's most atmospheric medieval quarter, a labyrinth of narrow cobblestone lanes tucked between the Gravensteen and the Leie. Once a working-class neighbourhood, it is now the city's culinary heart, packed with intimate restaurants in centuries-old buildings.
Patershol takes its name from the Carmelite friars (paters) who settled here in the 13th century. By the 19th century it had become a slum. A 1980s restoration campaign saved the medieval fabric and transformed it into a dining destination.
