The Belfry of Ghent (Belfort) is a 91-metre UNESCO World Heritage tower, the tallest belfry in Belgium and a symbol of the city's medieval civic power. The golden dragon atop the spire has watched over Ghent since the 14th century.
Construction began in 1313; the belfry served as the watchtower, alarm bell, and archive for the city's civic privileges. The original wooden spire was replaced by stone, then the current neo-Gothic iron-and-stone crown. UNESCO inscription in 1999.
