Zurenborg is a residential quarter southeast of the central station containing the most spectacular concentration of Art Nouveau, Neo-Renaissance, and eclectic architecture in Belgium. The star attraction is Cogels-Osylei, a boulevard of competing late 19th-century mansions.
Developed in the 1890s–1900s as a bourgeois residential quarter. Threatened with demolition in the 1970s, a citizens' campaign saved the neighbourhood. It is now a protected historic district.
