St. Anna Tunnel (Pedestrian Tunnel)

Overview

The Sint-Annatunnel is a 572-metre Art Deco pedestrian and cyclist tunnel under the River Schelde, connecting the city centre to the Linkeroever (Left Bank). Its original 1933 wooden escalators — among the oldest in Belgium — are protected monuments.

History

Built 1931–33 to replace an overloaded ferry service. The tunnel was a marvel of engineering at 31 metres below the riverbed. During WWII it served as an air-raid shelter for thousands.

• Free. Open daily 6:00–21:00.
• Cross to the Left Bank, enjoy the skyline view, and tunnel back.
• Duration: 15–20 minutes.
