Meir Shopping Street

Overview

The Meir is Antwerp's principal shopping boulevard, a wide pedestrianized street connecting Central Station to the old town. Its 19th-century facades house flagship stores, while the restored Stadsfeestzaal shopping arcade is an Art Nouveau-Renaissance gem.

Highlights

• Stadsfeestzaal: A 1908 festival hall with a stunning glass dome, restored after a 2000 fire, now a luxury shopping gallery.
• Royal Palace (Meir): An 18th-century Rococo palace at Meir 50, sometimes open for exhibitions.

History

The Meir has been Antwerp's commercial artery since the 16th century. Napoleon strolled it during his visit in 1803. The Stadsfeestzaal was built in 1908, gutted by fire in 2000, and spectacularly restored by 2007.
