St. Peter's Cemetery

Overview

The Petersfriedhof (St. Peter's Cemetery) is one of the most beautiful and oldest cemeteries in the world, nestled at the foot of the Mönchsberg cliff behind St. Peter's Abbey. Its wrought-iron crosses, flower-covered graves, and cliff-carved chapels create an unforgettable atmosphere.

• Cliff-Face Chapels: Rock-hewn chapels and catacombs carved into the sheer Mönchsberg wall.
• Notable Graves: Michael Haydn (brother of Joseph), Nannerl Mozart (Wolfgang's sister), and architect Santino Solari.

History

Buried here are traces of a Roman cemetery; Christian burials began with the abbey's founding in 696. The cemetery was famously (but inaccurately) used as the setting for the Von Trapp family's escape in The Sound of Music.
