Salzburg Museum

Overview

The Salzburg Museum occupies the Neue Residenz on Residenzplatz and tells the comprehensive story of the city from its Celtic-Roman origins to the modern era. It won the European Museum of the Year Award in 2009 for its innovative multimedia presentation.

Highlights

• Salzburg Myth: A top-floor exhibition exploring how Salzburg constructed its identity through Mozart, the Festival, and The Sound of Music.
• Archaeological Collection: Roman mosaics from Iuvavum and Celtic artifacts from before Salzburg's founding.
• Panorama Museum: A 26-meter circular painting of the city from 1829 by Johann Michael Sattler.

History

Founded in 1834, the museum moved to the Neue Residenz (completed 1602) in 2007 after a complete renovation. The Neue Residenz originally served as the guest wing of the archbishop's palace.

• Closed Mondays (except in July and August).
• Don't miss the Panorama room in the annex.
• Duration: 1–1.5 hours.
