The Salzburger Marionettentheater is the world's oldest marionette theatre, founded in 1913 by Anton Aicher. Its elaborate puppet productions of operas — Mozart, Rossini, Tchaikovsky — are performed with such artistry that UNESCO has inscribed its practice as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Anton Aicher, a sculptor, began performing with marionettes in 1913. His son Hermann internationalized the troupe, touring to Broadway and worldwide. The theatre moved to its current home at Schwarzstraße in 1971.
