Salzburg Advent Market

Overview

The Salzburg Christkindlmarkt is one of Austria's oldest and most atmospheric Christmas markets, held annually from mid-November through 26 December on Domplatz and Residenzplatz. The backdrop of the cathedral, Residenz, and illuminated fortress makes it one of Europe's most scenic.

Highlights

• Fortress Illumination: The lit Hohensalzburg above the market stalls creates a fairy-tale atmosphere.
• Krampus Runs: In early December, costumed Krampus figures parade through the Altstadt — a uniquely Alpine tradition.

History

Salzburg's Advent market has roots going back to the 15th century. The Domplatz location has been the primary market site since 1491. The Krampus tradition pre-dates Christianity, originating in Alpine pagan folklore.
