Nonnberg Abbey

Overview

Nonnberg Abbey (Stift Nonnberg) is the oldest continuously operating convent north of the Alps, founded around 714 AD. Perched on a hill below the Hohensalzburg Fortress, it is famous worldwide as the convent where the real Maria von Trapp was a novice before marrying Captain Georg von Trapp.

History

Founded by St. Rupert's niece Erentrudis around 714, the convent has been home to Benedictine nuns for over 1,300 years. Maria Augusta Kutschera entered as a novice in 1924 and left in 1926 to become governess to the Von Trapp children.

• Only the church is open to visitors; the convent is closed to the public.
• Climb the steps from Kaigasse — the approach is part of the experience.
