The Festungsbahn is Austria's oldest operating funicular railway, climbing 198 meters from Festungsgasse to the Hohensalzburg Fortress in about one minute. The steep gradient (62%) makes for a dramatic ascent through the Mönchsberg rock.
Built in 1892 to replace the mule path that had been the only access for centuries. Originally water-ballast powered, it was electrified in 1960. It carries approximately 1.8 million passengers per year.
