Triple Bridge

Overview

Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) is a unique set of three pedestrian bridges spanning the Ljubljanica River, connecting Prešeren Square to the old town. Designed by Jože Plečnik in 1932, it transformed a single stone bridge into an iconic architectural landmark.

Highlights

• Plečnik Design: The outer two bridges were added to the original 1842 stone bridge, creating a harmonious triangular composition.
• Balustrades: White stone balustrades and poplar-lined paths give the bridge a distinctly Mediterranean feel.

History

The original single bridge dates from 1842. In 1929–32, Plečnik added two adjacent footbridges, creating the distinctive triple form. The design was part of his broader vision to give Ljubljana a classical, human-scaled urban fabric.
