Prešeren Square

Overview

Prešeren Square is Ljubljana's central gathering place, named after France Prešeren, Slovenia's greatest poet. Dominated by the pink Franciscan Church of the Annunciation and a bronze statue of the poet, it is the social heart of the city.

History

The square took shape after the 1895 earthquake, which destroyed much of the city. It was named after Prešeren in 1905 when the monument was unveiled, becoming the symbolic center of Slovenian national identity.

• Tip 1: Look for Prešeren's gaze — the statue faces a small relief of his muse Julija Primic on a building across the square.
