Overview
The National and University Library (Narodna in univerzitetna knjižnica, NUK) is Plečnik's acknowledged masterpiece, completed in 1941. Its austere black marble and brick exterior gives way to a breathtaking staircase ascending from darkness into a light-filled reading hall.
Highlights
- Staircase of Enlightenment: A dramatic dark stone corridor that ascends into a brilliantly lit reading room — Plečnik's metaphor for the journey from ignorance to knowledge.
- Reading Room: A grand hall with tall windows, wooden desks, and a sense of timeless scholarly calm.
- Façade: The exterior mixes rough brick with dressed stone and features horse-head door handles.
History
Designed by Plečnik and built between 1936 and 1941, the building replaced an earlier palace destroyed in the 1895 earthquake. It is widely considered Plečnik's greatest work and was part of the 2021 UNESCO inscription.
