Overview
Metelkova City (Metelkova mesto) is an autonomous cultural center in former Yugoslav military barracks. Covered in street art and graffiti, it serves as Ljubljana's alternative culture hub with galleries, studios, concert venues, and nightclubs.
Highlights
- Street Art: The entire complex is an ever-changing canvas of murals, mosaics, and sculptural installations.
- Live Venues: Multiple clubs and bars host punk, electronic, jazz, and experimental music events.
- Celica Hostel: A former military prison converted into an art hostel, with each cell redesigned by a different artist.
History
When the Yugoslav military withdrew in 1993, squatters prevented the demolition of the seven barracks buildings. It was legalized in the 2000s and now operates as a self-managed cultural center.
