Overview
Križanke is an open-air theatre set in a Plečnik-renovated former monastery courtyard. It is the principal venue for the Ljubljana Summer Festival, hosting opera, ballet, orchestral concerts, and drama from late June through August.
Highlights
- Plečnik Courtyard: The former Teutonic Order monastery, redesigned by Plečnik in 1952, creates an intimate, acoustically excellent outdoor stage.
- Ljubljana Summer Festival: Slovenia's premier performing arts festival, running since 1953.
- Night Atmosphere: Performances under the stars in a walled courtyard create a magical setting.
History
The site was a 13th-century Teutonic Order monastery. Plečnik transformed it into a cultural venue in 1952, adding a classical arcade, an atrium, and terraced seating. The Ljubljana Summer Festival debuted here in 1953.
Visitor Tips
- Tip 1: Book popular performances well in advance — opera and ballet sell out quickly.
- Tip 2: Bring a light jacket; evenings can be cool even in summer.
- Duration: 1.5–2.5 hours (performance dependent).
