Overview
The Palais Rohan is a magnificent Baroque palace on the banks of the Ill, housing three separate museums under one roof: the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Decorative Arts, and the Fine Arts Museum. It is the finest 18th-century building in Strasbourg.
Highlights
- Royal Apartments: Sumptuously decorated state rooms where Louis XV, Marie Antoinette, and Napoleon stayed.
- Archaeological Museum: One of the best in France, covering Alsatian prehistory through the Merovingian period.
- Fine Arts Collection: Italian, Flemish, and French paintings including works by Raphael, El Greco, and Rubens.
History
Built between 1732 and 1742 for Cardinal Armand de Rohan-Soubise, Bishop of Strasbourg, the palace was designed by royal architect Robert de Cotte. It served as the episcopal residence until the Revolution and has housed museums since 1898.
Visitor Tips
- Three-in-One: A combined ticket covers all three museums — worthwhile for a comprehensive visit.
- The Facade: The waterside facade facing the Ill is most photogenic from the Pont Sainte-Madeleine.
- Duration: 1.5–2 hours for all three museums.
