Overview
The Musée de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame occupies a cluster of medieval and Renaissance buildings beside the cathedral, housing the original Gothic sculptures and stained glass removed from the cathedral facade for preservation. It is the essential companion visit to the cathedral.
Highlights
- Original Statues: The actual 13th-century sculptured figures from the cathedral's portals — including the famous Wise and Foolish Virgins.
- Stained Glass: Medieval stained glass panels from the cathedral and other Alsatian churches, displayed in atmospheric half-timbered rooms.
- The Building: A stunning complex of medieval houses with a Gothic garden and 14th-century courtyard.
History
The Fondation de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame has maintained the cathedral since 1224 — one of the oldest building maintenance institutions in the world. The museum was created to preserve original cathedral sculptures replaced by copies during 19th- and 20th-century restorations.
