Overview
Plage des Catalans is Marseille's closest beach to the city center — a small, sandy crescent just 500 meters south of the Vieux-Port. It is deeply loved by Marseillais as their local beach, busy from the first warm spring day through late October.
Highlights
- Proximity: Just a 10-minute walk from the Vieux-Port, making it the only central urban beach in the city.
- Water Polo: The Catalans water polo club has played here since 1903 — one of the oldest water sports clubs in France.
- Sunset Views: The beach faces west-northwest, offering beautiful sunset views over the offshore islands.
History
The beach takes its name from Catalan fishermen who settled near this cove in the 18th century. It has been a popular bathing spot since the 19th century and remains the most accessible public beach for central Marseille residents.
Visitor Tips
- Arrive Early: The small beach fills quickly in summer — arrive before 10:00 to claim a spot.
