Overview
The Parc Borély is Marseille's grandest urban park — a 17-hectare estate adjoining the Prado beaches, featuring formal French gardens, an English landscape park, a botanical garden, and the neoclassical Château Borély housing a decorative arts museum.
Highlights
- Botanical Garden: Over 3,000 plant species, including a notable collection of Mediterranean and tropical flora.
- Château Borély: An elegant 18th-century bastide (Provençal country house) now housing the Museum of Decorative Arts, Faience, and Fashion.
- Lake: A tranquil boating lake surrounded by mature plane trees — ideal for a quiet afternoon escape.
History
The estate was acquired by the wealthy merchant Louis Borély in 1775. The Château was built between 1767 and 1778. The city of Marseille purchased the property in 1856 and opened it as a public park. The botanical garden was established in 1880.
