The Musée Cantini occupies a handsome 17th-century hôtel particulier near the Vieux-Port, housing an excellent collection of modern art from the 1900s to 1960s. Its Fauvist, Cubist, and Surrealist holdings make it one of the strongest modern art collections in southern France.
The museum was created in 1936 from a donation by marble sculptor Jules Cantini, who bequeathed his 17th-century townhouse to the city. The permanent collection focuses on 20th-century art from 1900 to 1960, complemented by ambitious temporary exhibitions.
