The MuCEM (Musée des Civilisations de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée) is a striking contemporary museum wrapped in a latticed concrete shell, sitting on the waterfront at the entrance to the Vieux-Port. Opened in 2013 when Marseille was European Capital of Culture, it explores Mediterranean civilizations through immersive exhibitions.
The MuCEM inherited the ethnographic collections of the former Musée des Arts et Traditions Populaires in Paris. The new building, designed by Rudy Ricciotti and Roland Carta, opened on June 7, 2013. It was the centerpiece of Marseille-Provence European Capital of Culture 2013.
