Overview
The Jardin du Pharo is a breezy, palm-lined park surrounding the Palais du Pharo, perched on a headland overlooking the Vieux-Port entrance and the open Mediterranean. It offers one of Marseille's finest sunset viewpoints.
Highlights
- Sunset Views: The west-facing garden is Marseille's premier sunset location, with panoramic views over the Vieux-Port, Fort Saint-Jean, and the sea.
- Palais du Pharo: Napoleon III's seaside residence, now a conference center, provides an elegant architectural backdrop.
- Children's Playground: A well-equipped playground makes it popular with local families.
History
Napoleon III had the Palais du Pharo built between 1858 and 1870 as a seaside residence for Empress Eugénie. She never occupied it, and following the fall of the Second Empire, it was donated to the city of Marseille. The surrounding park was opened to the public.
Visitor Tips
- Golden Hour: Visit an hour before sunset for the best light over the Vieux-Port.
