Overview
The Îles du Frioul are a small archipelago of four islands in the Bay of Marseille, just 20 minutes by ferry from the Vieux-Port. With rocky coves, crystal-clear swimming waters, and sparse Mediterranean vegetation, they offer a dramatic natural escape within sight of the city.
Highlights
- Swimming Coves: Dozens of secluded, rocky coves with exceptionally clear turquoise water — some of the best swimming near Marseille.
- Caroline Hospital: The ruins of the massive 19th-century quarantine hospital on Ratonneau Island, once quarantining plague victims arriving by sea.
- Bird Life: The islands are an important nesting site for seabirds, including the rare Scopoli's shearwater.
History
The Frioul Islands have served as Marseille's quarantine station since the 17th century. The Caroline Hospital, built after the devastating plague of 1720 that killed half of Marseille's population, operated until the early 20th century. Today the islands are part of a protected maritime zone.
