La Friche la Belle de Mai is Marseille's largest alternative cultural space — a former tobacco factory transformed into a sprawling complex of artist studios, exhibition spaces, concert halls, and a rooftop terrace. It is the creative engine of the city's contemporary art scene.
The 45,000 m² former Seita tobacco factory closed in 1990 and was progressively occupied by artist collectives beginning in 1992. Rather than demolishing the site, the city supported its transformation into a cultural hub. It now hosts over 70 cultural organizations and 400 artists.
