Fort Saint-Jean

Overview

Fort Saint-Jean guards the northern entrance to the Vieux-Port, its medieval and 17th-century fortifications now seamlessly integrated into the MuCEM museum complex. The fort's gardens, ramparts, and historic towers are free to explore and offer some of Marseille's finest harbor views.

History

The site has guarded the harbor entrance since the 12th century. Louis XIV built the current fortifications in 1660, directing the cannons inward toward the rebellious city rather than out to sea — a calculated political statement. It served as a military installation until 2013.
