Overview
The Quais de Saône run along the west bank of the Saône river from Vieux Lyon north to the Île Barbe, offering a scenic waterfront promenade lined with Renaissance buildings, painted walls, and petit-pont bridges. The quieter counterpart to the Berges du Rhône.
Highlights
- Painted Walls: Several major trompe-l'oeil murals — including the Fresque des Lyonnais — line the quaysides.
- Passerelle Views: The multiple footbridges crossing the Saône offer perfect framing of Vieux Lyon and Fourvière hill.
- Evening Atmosphere: The Quai de Bondy and Quai Saint-Vincent are popular for evening strolls and outdoor dining.
History
The Saône quays were originally port facilities serving Lyon's river trade. Extensively rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries, they now form a continuous pedestrian promenade. The west bank preserves the city's most atmospheric relationship between river, medieval architecture, and hillside.
Visitor Tips
- Golden Hour: The late afternoon sun illuminates the Renaissance facades of Vieux Lyon across the river — perfect for photography.
