The Presqu'île is the narrow peninsula of land between the Rhône and Saône rivers that forms Lyon's commercial and social heart. Stretching from Place Bellecour north to Place des Terreaux, it concentrates the city's grandest squares, finest shopping streets, and most elegant Haussmann-era architecture.
The Presqu'île was dramatically reshaped in the 19th century by Prefect Claude-Marius Vaïsse, who — inspired by Haussmann's Paris — widened streets, created grand boulevards, and imposed uniform building facades. The area is part of Lyon's UNESCO World Heritage site, inscribed in 1998.
