Overview
The Jardin Rosa Mir is one of Lyon's most extraordinary hidden gems — a tiny, fantastical garden made entirely of seashells, stones, and concrete, hidden in a residential courtyard in La Croix-Rousse. It is classified as a work of art brut and opens only on weekends.
Highlights
- Shell Mosaics: Every surface — columns, arches, walls, and walkways — is covered with thousands of seashells and pebbles arranged in intricate patterns.
- Secret Location: Finding the garden, tucked inside a residential apartment block at 87 Grande Rue de la Croix-Rousse, is part of the adventure.
- Art Brut: The garden is recognized as a significant example of outsider art, comparable to the Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval.
History
Created single-handedly between 1957 and 1983 by Jules Senis, a Spanish mason who emigrated to Lyon. After surviving cancer, Senis dedicated himself to building this fantastical garden as a personal sanctuary, using materials collected from beaches and demolition sites. The garden was classified as a historic monument after his death.
