Overview
The Institut Lumière is the cultural wing of the Lumière estate, operating a repertory cinema in the Hangar du Premier-Film — a modern building on the site of the original Lumière factory. It is the institutional guardian of the Lumière brothers' legacy and a major venue for Lyon's film culture.

History
Founded in 1982 by filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier and historian Bernard Chardère to preserve the Lumière heritage. The Hangar du Premier-Film cinema was inaugurated in 1998. The Prix Lumière has been awarded to Martin Scorsese, Jane Fonda, Francis Ford Coppola, and Wim Wenders, among others.
