The esplanade in front of the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière offers Lyon's most celebrated panoramic view — a sweeping, unobstructed vista across the entire city, from the Presqu'île and Vieux Lyon below to the Alps on the eastern horizon on clear days.
Fourvière hill (Latin: Forum Vetus) was the site of the original Roman settlement of Lugdunum, founded in 43 BC. For two millennia, this hilltop has served as the city's spiritual and strategic high ground. The current esplanade was landscaped in the late 19th century during the construction of the basilica.
