Overview
The Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux is one of the most beautiful opera houses in Europe — a monumental neoclassical temple with 12 Corinthian columns and a balustrade crowned by 12 statues of goddesses and muses. Its interior is equally spectacular.
Highlights
- The Grand Staircase: The sweeping marble staircase inspired Charles Garnier's design for the Paris Opéra.
- Performance Hall: An intimate 1,114-seat auditorium with extraordinary acoustics, a painted ceiling, and a massive crystal chandelier.
- The Colonnade: Twelve Corinthian columns supporting statues of the nine Muses and three goddesses.
History
Designed by architect Victor Louis and inaugurated on April 17, 1780, it is considered a masterpiece of neoclassical design. The Grand Staircase so impressed the young Charles Garnier that he copied its layout for his Paris Opéra nearly a century later.
