La Cité du Vin

Overview

La Cité du Vin is a spectacular wine museum and cultural center housed in a curving, organic-shaped building on the banks of the Garonne. Designed by XTU Architects to evoke swirling wine in a glass, it offers immersive, multi-sensory exhibitions exploring wine cultures worldwide.

Highlights

• Permanent Exhibition: An interactive 3,000 m² journey through 20 themed zones covering viticulture, terroirs, and wine in art and civilization.
• The Belvedere: An 8th-floor panoramic tasting room where every ticket includes a glass of wine with 360° views over Bordeaux.
• Workshops: Regular tasting masterclasses, blending workshops, and food-pairing sessions.

History

Opened on June 1, 2016, La Cité du Vin was a €81 million project anchoring the regeneration of the Bassins à Flot waterfront district. It is deliberately not a Bordeaux wine museum — it explores wine culture from Georgia to Argentina, positioning Bordeaux as a global wine capital.

Visitor Tips

• The Belvedere: Don't skip the rooftop tasting — the view alone is worth the visit.
