The Basilique Saint-Michel is a towering Flamboyant Gothic church crowned by a 114-meter freestanding bell tower — the highest in southern France. The surrounding Place Saint-Michel is the vibrant, multicultural heart of Bordeaux's most diverse neighborhood.
Construction began in the 14th century and spanned over 200 years. The bell tower was completed in 1492. Like Pey-Berland, it was built separately from the church to isolate vibrations. The basilica is a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Santiago pilgrimage routes.
