Overview
The Reeperbahn is Hamburg's legendary entertainment strip — a neon-lit boulevard in the St. Pauli district that has been the city's nightlife, music, and red-light district for over a century. It is where the Beatles honed their craft in the early 1960s.
Highlights
- Live Music: Dozens of live music venues, from the legendary Große Freiheit 36 to intimate clubs, make St. Pauli one of Europe's best live music neighborhoods.
- Beatles History: The Fab Four played marathon sets at the Star-Club and other venues here in 1960–62, before achieving international fame.
- Nightlife Diversity: Everything from cocktail bars and jazz clubs to rock venues and theatrical performances coexist on the Reeperbahn.
History
The name derives from 'Reepschläger' (ropemakers) who historically worked in the area. The street became Hamburg's entertainment district in the 19th century. The Beatles played at the Star-Club, Indra, and Kaiserkeller between 1960 and 1962, transforming the district into a rock music pilgrimage site.
