Overview
Planten un Blomen ('Plants and Flowers' in Low German) is Hamburg's most beautiful inner-city park — a 47-hectare green oasis featuring Japanese gardens, tropical greenhouses, roller-skating paths, and spectacular fountain light shows in summer.
Highlights
- Water-Light Concerts: Free nightly illuminated fountain shows set to music in the Parksee (May–September) — a Hamburg summer tradition.
- Japanese Garden: The largest Japanese garden in Europe, with koi ponds, cherry blossoms, and a traditional tea house.
- Tropical Greenhouses: A cluster of glass houses with cacti, tropical plants, and a Mediterranean section — free entry.
History
The park traces its origins to the Hamburg Botanical Garden established in 1821. It was extensively redesigned for the 1953 International Garden Exhibition and again for IGA 1963 and 1973. The Japanese Garden was a gift from the city of Osaka.
Visitor Tips
- Evening Shows: The water-light concerts start at 22:00 in summer — arrive early for a good seat.
- Skating: A large dedicated roller-skating area makes this a favorite family destination.
- Duration: 45–60 minutes.
