Overview
Jungfernstieg is Hamburg's most elegant boulevard — a curving promenade along the southern shore of the Binnenalster lake, lined with luxury shops, the historic Alsterhaus department store, and ferry landings for lake cruises.
Highlights
- Alster Views: Sweeping views across the Binnenalster lake to the city's church spires — an iconic Hamburg panorama.
- Alsterhaus: The grande dame of Hamburg's department stores, a Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) building dating from 1912.
- Flagship Stores: International luxury brands line the boulevard and its side streets.
History
The name Jungfernstieg ('Maidens' Walk') derives from the tradition of Hamburg's elite families parading their unmarried daughters along the promenade. The boulevard was the first street in Germany to be asphalted (1838) and has been the city's premier address ever since.
