The Deichtorhallen are two vast former market halls — among the largest exhibition spaces for contemporary art and photography in Europe. Their soaring iron-and-glass structures provide dramatic, cathedral-like settings for blockbuster exhibitions.

History

The Deichtorhallen were originally wholesale flower and vegetable market halls on the eastern edge of the city center. After the markets moved, the halls were converted into exhibition spaces in 1989, quickly establishing themselves as premier venues for contemporary art.
