Overview
The Alster Lakes — Binnenalster (Inner Alster) and Außenalster (Outer Alster) — are two interconnected urban lakes in the heart of Hamburg. Ringed by elegant town houses, grand hotels, and tree-lined footpaths, they give Hamburg its distinctive water-laced character.
Highlights
- Außenalster Path: A 7.4 km walking and cycling path encircles the larger Außenalster, passing through parks and gardens.
- Canoe & Kayak: Rent a boat from one of several lakeside rental points and paddle through Hamburg's network of canals and waterways.
- Alster Fountain: A 60-meter water jet in the center of the Binnenalster — illuminated at night.
History
The Alster is a dammed tributary of the Elbe, artificially widened in the 13th century to power watermills. The inner lake was created by the construction of the Lombard Bridge in 1868. The Alster has been central to Hamburg's identity and recreation since the 17th century.
