Sachsenhausen is the district south of the Main River — Frankfurt's most atmospheric neighborhood, known for its traditional Apfelwein (apple wine) taverns, cobblestone streets, and the concentration of Museumsufer museums along its riverbank.
Sachsenhausen was an independent village until it was incorporated into Frankfurt in 1318. The apple wine tradition dates to the 16th century, when Frankfurt's vineyards were devastated by climate change and winemakers switched to apple cider. Several taverns have served Apfelwein continuously for over a century.
