Overview
The Neue Altstadt (New Old Town) is Frankfurt's ambitious 2018 reconstruction of the historic city center destroyed in World War II — 35 buildings between the Römerberg and the Dom, blending faithful historical reconstructions with contemporary interpretations.
Highlights
- Goldene Waage: The most elaborate reconstruction — a stunning Renaissance merchants' house with a gilded rooftop belvedere offering cathedral views.
- Architectural Mix: 15 faithful reconstructions based on historical evidence sit alongside 20 contemporary buildings inspired by historical forms.
- Hühnermarkt: The central square, anchored by the Stoltze Fountain, is a lively gathering space.
History
The original Altstadt — one of the largest half-timbered old towns in Germany — was obliterated in the March 1944 bombing raids. After decades of debate, the city approved the reconstruction in 2007. The Neue Altstadt opened in September 2018 at a cost of €200 million.
Visitor Tips
- Goldene Waage: The reconstructed interiors are open as a museum — don't miss the rooftop terrace.
- Ground Floors: Shopping and dining occupy the ground floors of most buildings.
- Duration: 45–60 minutes.
