Overview
The Museum für Moderne Kunst (MMK) occupies a striking triangular building by Viennese architect Hans Hollein — nicknamed the 'Slice of Cake.' It houses an outstanding collection of contemporary and modern art from the 1960s to the present.
Highlights
- The Building: Hollein's postmodern triangular design makes inventive use of its difficult wedge-shaped site.
- The Collection: Major works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Gerhard Richter, and Bruce Nauman.
- Site-Specific Installations: The irregular gallery spaces inspire artists to create works tailored to the unique architecture.
History
Founded in 1981 and opening in its Hollein-designed building in 1991, the MMK rapidly built one of Europe's most significant contemporary art collections. It has since expanded to two satellite venues: MMK2 (TaunusTurm) and MMK3 (Zollamt).
Visitor Tips
- Wednesday Evenings: Extended hours until 20:00 on Wednesdays.
