Overview
The Goethe-Haus is the reconstructed birthplace and childhood home of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe — Germany's greatest poet and author of 'Faust.' The house recreates the bourgeois Frankfurt interior where Goethe grew up, complete with period furnishings.
Highlights
- Writing Room: The small study where the young Goethe wrote his early works, including the first version of 'Die Leiden des jungen Werthers.'
- Period Rooms: Fourteen rooms furnished with 18th-century originals recreating the prosperous Goethe family household.
- Adjacent Museum: The Frankfurter Goethe-Museum displays paintings, manuscripts, and personal objects from Goethe's life.
History
Goethe was born in this house on August 28, 1749, and lived here until he left for university in 1765. The house was destroyed in the 1944 bombing but meticulously rebuilt using salvaged fragments, original furniture (which had been evacuated), and archival photographs.
