The Eiserner Steg is Frankfurt's beloved iron pedestrian bridge spanning the Main River between the Römerberg and Sachsenhausen. Its neo-Gothic ironwork and padlock-covered railings frame iconic views of the skyline.
Built in 1868–69 and financed by Frankfurt's citizens through a share subscription, the Eiserner Steg was one of the first iron bridges in Germany. It was destroyed in 1945 and rebuilt in simplified form by 1946 — one of Frankfurt's earliest post-war reconstruction projects.
