Overview
The Alte Oper (Old Opera House) is a magnificent Italian Renaissance-style concert hall on the Opernplatz. Destroyed in World War II and rebuilt as a concert and event venue, it is one of Frankfurt's most elegant buildings and a major music venue.
Highlights
- The Facade: A majestic colonnaded facade with gilded lettering reading 'Dem Wahren, Schönen, Guten' (To the True, the Beautiful, the Good).
- Concert Hall: The Großer Saal (Great Hall) hosts classical concerts, ballet, and Frankfurt's premier cultural events.
- Opernplatz: The elegant square in front, with its fountain and café terraces, is one of Frankfurt's most pleasant public spaces.
History
Designed by Richard Lucae and opened in 1880, the opera house was destroyed in the 1944 bombing of Frankfurt. After decades as a ruin (nicknamed 'Germany's most beautiful ruin'), it was rebuilt between 1976 and 1981 as a concert and conference hall.
Visitor Tips
- From Outside: The facade is the main attraction for non-concert visitors.
