Overview
Neumarkt is Cologne's largest inner-city square, a transportation hub and shopping intersection anchored by the Romanesque St. Aposteln church. The Weltstadthaus by Renzo Piano and the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum flank its edges.
Highlights
- St. Aposteln Church: One of twelve Romanesque churches with a distinctive trefoil east end.
- Weltstadthaus: Renzo Piano's organic glass-and-steel department store, nicknamed "the whale."
- Transit Hub: Major tram and U-Bahn interchange connecting all parts of the city.
History
Neumarkt has served as a marketplace since the 11th century. It marked the western edge of the medieval city and became a major crossroads after the city walls were demolished in the 19th century.
