History
Founded by the Cologne Zoological Society in 1860, it was Germany's third zoo after Berlin and Frankfurt. The zoo was largely destroyed in WWII and has been progressively rebuilt with modern, conservation-focused enclosures.
Visitor Tips
- Morning visits are best — animals are most active before noon.
- Combine with the adjacent Flora Botanical Garden (free entry) and the cable car to Rheinpark.
- Duration: 2.5–3 hours.
