Cologne Cathedral

Overview

Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction began in 1248 and was completed in 1880, making it a 632-year building project. With twin spires reaching 157 meters, it was the world's tallest structure upon completion.

Highlights

• Twin Spires: Climb 533 steps to the south tower platform at 97 meters for sweeping Rhine panoramas.
• Shrine of the Three Kings: A gilded reliquary from 1190–1220, the largest in the Western world.
• Richter Window: A 113-square-meter stained glass window by artist Gerhard Richter, installed in 2007 with 11,500 colored glass squares.

History

The cathedral was built to house the relics of the Three Magi, brought from Milan in 1164. Construction stalled in 1473 with only one tower partially complete; the building was finally finished in the 19th century during a surge of Prussian national pride. It survived 14 aerial bombings in World War II.

Visitor Tips

• Free entry to the nave; tower climb and treasury require separate tickets (€6 and €6 respectively).
• Best photos: Shoot from the Hohenzollern Bridge or the KölnTriangle observation deck across the Rhine.
• Duration: 1–1.5 hours (add 30 min for the tower climb).
