Overview
Cologne's Altstadt (Old Town) stretches along the left bank of the Rhine, a dense quarter of narrow lanes, Romanesque churches, and traditional Kölsch brewhouses. Despite heavy WWII destruction, the reconstructed quarter preserves the medieval street pattern and colorful gabled houses.
Highlights
- Brewhouse Culture: Dozens of Kölsch beer halls — try Früh, Päffgen, or Gaffel for the local top-fermented ale.
- Fish Market (Fischmarkt): Picturesque square with colored facades, perfect for people-watching.
- Heumarkt: Large square hosting seasonal events including the famous Christmas market with a skating rink.
History
Cologne's old town dates to the Roman colonial era (50 AD). Most buildings were destroyed in WWII; the reconstruction faithfully restored the medieval street grid while modernizing infrastructure.
Visitor Tips

- Evening atmosphere is best — brewhouses buzz from 18:00 onwards.
- Duration: 1.5–2 hours.
